-->\n<p>It has long been established that changing an envi\u00acron\u00acment can reduce crime. For example, increased light in an area has the potential to discourage would-be offenders by making them more visible. Along the same lines, people have been found to be more likely to refrain from committing crimes when observed or in the presence of images of eyes \u2013 something that has been dubbed the watching-eyes effect. But do corresponding neighborhood crime reduction interventions double up as measures to reduce fear of crime? What impact do they have on average citizens?<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-80ad180 elementor-widget elementor-widget-spacer\" data-id=\"80ad180\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"spacer.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer-inner\"><\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6df4aea elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"6df4aea\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>In a first-of-its-kind <span style=\"color: #e3b969;\"><a style=\"color: #e3b969;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0264275124000374?via%3Dihub\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">virtual reality study<\/a>,<\/span> criminologists based in Germany, the Netherlands, and the UK \u2013 including Patrick McClana-han, Aniek Siezenga, and Jean-Louis van Gelder from the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Crime, Security and Law \u2013 found that environmental crime reduction interventions cannot automatically be transferred to fear of crime reduction measures.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b323d5c elementor-widget elementor-widget-spacer\" data-id=\"b323d5c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"spacer.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer-inner\"><\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5d1ecf3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5d1ecf3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Study participants\u2019 perceived fear of crime remained unchanged by increased street lighting. \u201cMotion-activated, dynamic street lighting has been shown to be a factor in deterring offenders. But it doesn\u2019t seem to make people less afraid of crime. This finding was really quite surprising as previous research has shown lighting to be effective at reducing fear of crime. So, our results suggest that light may be more effective in certain conditions than others\u201d, explains Senior Researcher Patrick McClanahan.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6270bdc elementor-widget elementor-widget-spacer\" data-id=\"6270bdc\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"spacer.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer-inner\"><\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-78daf60 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"78daf60\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>When it comes to watching-eyes interventions, they actually led to increased fear of crime levels. \u201cOne of the whole reasons watching-eyes work to reduce crime is that they are meant to make people feel slightly uncomfortable and watched\u201d, McClanahan explains. \u201cSo it isn\u2019t surprising that such interventions might inadvertently be counterproductive and lead to more fear of crime.\u201d<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2ba7de5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-spacer\" data-id=\"2ba7de5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"spacer.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer-inner\"><\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6ff1707 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"6ff1707\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>With high levels of fear of crime associated with people engaging less with their community, lower use of public spaces, and a general sense of overall anxiety, the livability of neighborhoods can be at stake. \u201cIn light of these findings, we need to better understand the nuances of such environ\u00acmen\u00actal interventions,\u201d adds McClanahan. \u201cWe need to find out if and when they can make the average citizen less afraid, but also what unintended consequences they might have.\u201d The researchers aim to build on the results of the study and explore the boundary conditions of such environmental interventions \u2013 i.e., the specific circumstances under which an intervention is indeed effective. In the Department of Criminology research studies and experiments are conducted with virtual reality and other novel technologies. Virtual reality is a powerful tool in the researcher\u2019s toolbox. It allows researchers to get close to real-world behavior like a field study while retaining the experimental control found in laboratory experiments. Importantly, researchers retain the ability to assess perceptions and attitudes of the participants \u2013 an important aspect often assumed and left unexamined. When it comes to crime, this is particularly impactful, as crimes tend to be committed in secret and cannot be observed by traditional study methods. In 2022, the Institute opened its criminological virtual reality research lab <span style=\"color: #e3b969;\"><a style=\"color: #e3b969;\" href=\"https:\/\/csl.mpg.de\/en\/maxlab\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MAXLab<\/a><\/span>.
